Online bingo fraud cases seem to have become more and more prevalent over the past couple of years. We are only in the third week of January 2012 and already we have seen two big online bingo related fraud cases come up in court which had led to jail sentences, albeit one of them receiving a suspended sentence for 2 years.
First was the case of 41 year old Lucienne Mainely from Suffolk. She was given a 16 month jail sentence for stealing more than £76,000 from her employer (APD Ltd) to fund her online bingo addiction.
Lucienne was an accounts administrator for the firm and a trusted employee as she had worked for them for more than 20 years, which is a heck of a long time. Her troubles reportedly started after her marriage broke down. She took to playing bingo online as a way of release and became addicted to the game which led to her stealing this huge sum to fund her habit.
Suspicions first arose when Lucienne was caught paying £800 into her personal account in January 2011. When she was found out, Luicenne apologised and paid the money back (which should have been the end of the matter) – although, maybe APD should have been more vigilant at this time, because if someone from the accounts department was caught (effectively stealing) it should have set alarm bells ringing immediately.
However this was not the case and it wasn’t until October 2011 that the full strength of Luicenne’s fraudulent activity came to light. One of their suppliers had made a payment of £3,000, but instead of paying it into the Company’s account; she put in her own account. She was found out, which led to a full investigation and this unveiled the full extent of her fraud. This in truth amounted to over £80,000 the company said as they also had to re-pay back VAT it had claimed.
Jailing Lucienne from Suffolk for 16 months, Judge Peter Fenn said: ‘The message must go out loud and clear from this court to those who might succumb to temptation to steal from those whose money they are in a position of managing.’
In the net case Caroline Shopland-Saich, used her company’s (Applegate Media) credit card to fund her online bingo habit at Foxy Bingo. She reportedly stole £22,620 over a 21 month period due to her addiction, but it must of all got too much for her as Caroline handed herself in at the Police station and confessed all.
The must of counted for something with the court, because upon sentencing her Judge John Neligan of Exeter Crown Court, told her: “This started in a small way and I accept it spiralled out of control.” Caroline was given a 12 month jail sentence, which was suspended for 2 years and she was ordered to do 200 hours of community service.
Caroline was an advertising executive for Applegate and was given control of the credit card so she could purchase vouchers as a reward for their successful sales reps.
